Spirited Free Movement
Boosts Healthy DNA Expression!
Moving your body sends a clear message to your DNA. Spirited Movement energizes, supports blood flow, aids muscle growth and improves your mood. And, if that isn’t enough to get you moving your body it has now been discovered that exercise or as I like to call it Spirited Free Movement actually changes your DNA!
“Exercise is medicine, and it seems the means to alter our epigenomes for better health may be only a jog away” ~ Juleen Zierath PhD
Spirited Movement of your body has been found to reverse a temporary chemical change called methylation, where a particular chemical compound attaches to the outer part of the DNA strand. DNA contains the genetic “code” that the body uses to produce proteins, and methylation alters the rate at which proteins can be produced by the methylated genes.
A recent study was published in the peer-reviewed journal Cell Metabolism. It reported on researchers from the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, and Dublin City University in Ireland who discovered that just a few minutes of rigorous exercise is enough to spur almost immediate changes in DNA that improve the ways health-regulating genes express themselves.
Although your actual genetic code is not changed by exercise, DNA methylation, the process by which genes are told whether or not to remain “on” or “off,” is altered in a way that without question improves normal bodily function. Based on a comparison of skeletal muscle both before and three hours after exercise, Juleen Zierath, Professor of Clinical Integrative Physiology at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery, and her colleagues observed that exercise demonstrably spurs DNA to better transport fats, sugars, and other nutrients throughout the body, as well as protect cells from oxidative damage. Those epigenetic modifications to the DNA, at precise locations, are an important part of the physiological benefits of exercise.
“Our muscles are really plastic.
We often say ‘You are what you eat.’
Well, muscle adapts to what you do.
If you don’t use it, you lose it and
this is one of the mechanisms that allow that to happen.”
Juleen Zierath PhD

Though the DNA changes were only temporary, they do illustrate how the body reacts to Spirited Free Movement, and how the muscles being worked by movement respond in terms of growth and nutrient transport. By getting just a few minutes of rigorous movement every day, you are essentially teaching your DNA how to distribute nutrients, build muscle, and ultimately improve health.
Spirited Free Movement is a powerful way for you to communicate with your DNA, which also feels good and increases wellbeing.
6 Silly Ways to Incorporate Spirited Free Movement into Your Life:
- Go ahead, try skipping instead of walking
- Don’t just take the stairs, run or do the two step
- When leaving the store hoist your bags to the sky, repeatedly
- Dust and vacuum with wild abandon
- Entertain friends by throwing a hula-hoop, dance party
- Try flying a kite when there’s no wind
